Main Island Alameda – Zipcode 94501

The Bronze Coast spans the southeast section of central Alameda and contains many beautiful vintage homes as well.  Here you can find the particularly gorgeous Queen Anne homes in the section called Leonardsville; all built by the prolific builder Joseph Leonard.

Central Alameda is the heart of the city and contains thousands of beautiful vintage homes including Victorians, colonial revivals, craftsman, tudors, bungalows, Mediterranean, Italianate and more.  One of the more prolific builders of the late 1800s was Marcuse & Remmel who built hundreds of Victorians in the area.  Many of the older buildings have been converted into mult-iunit dwellings and there are a sprinkling of newer apartment buildings in the area. Local churches, restaurants, bars, coffee shops, and other businesses dot the neighborhood including the always fun to visit tiki bar Forbidden Island.

The East End is the eastern section of the main Alameda island has a nice assortment of Craftsmans, Tudors, Colonial Revivals and Victorians, and a number of waterfront homes(some with boat docks). There are also many homes built in the 1940s and some art deco and mid-century homes. The area also includes the spacious and beautiful Lincoln Park with playgrounds, tennis courts, a pool and ball fields. Just off High Street is Thompson Street or Christmas Tree lane which boasts an entire street of spectacular Christmas decorations. There is a small shopping center on the north side with a well-appointed gourmet grocery and a few restaurants, and quick access to 880, BART, the Oakland Airport. The southern end of this section has some newer homes that face onto the bay. The East End is bordered on its western edge by Park Street which is Alameda’s primary shopping street with many excellent restaurants, boutiques, services and the historic 20s-built and beautifully-restored Alameda Cinema.

The Gold Coast spans the southwest section of central Alameda and is regarded as Alameda’s premier and exclusive area.  It’s home to the most spectacular and beautiful vintage homes and commands a premium price for its properties.  The historic Franklin Park sits amidst some of the prettiest homes and contains playgrounds, tennis courts, a swimming pool, ball fields, and picnic areas shaded by giant redwood trees. Halloween is a particularly big deal in the Gold Coast and people come from all over to visit the splendid decorations.

The North Side of central Alameda includes some newer housing developments including Marina Village which has water view homes and the newest complex Marina Shores which was recently completed. Several new developments are planned including the restoration of the Del Monte warehouse into a mixed use building. Encinal Terminals would also be a mixed use area with public access to the shoreline and the recently approved Marina development which will revamp the existing docks, repurpose some of the existing WWII era buildings, add more residential and commercial buildings and add more water access for the public.

The Southshore area of Alameda extends from the original south shore of the island, now a chain of artificial lagoons, outwards toward the bay on landfill. The land was created by the Utah Construction Company during the 1950s and 1960s, and the neighborhood was built in a more suburban style than the rest of the island, with a mix of Tract housing and large apartment complexes, and strict single-use zoning. It is the location of the South Shore Center shopping complex, Alameda's only large shopping mall. The two mile long Crown Memorial State Beach lies along the neighborhood's southern shore with beautiful views of the San Francisco skyline and a lively summer scene with beachgoers and kitesurfers.

The West End of Alameda contains a variety of vintage homes much like Central Alameda along with sizeable newer home districts including Bay Port, Crown Harbor and Tri Point Homes.  West end businesses include a diverse array of local boutiques, international cuisines, innovation, and the award-winning craft beverages along Spirits Alley. We also have the wonderful Washington Park, Crown Memorial State Beach and Crab Cove where many public events are held including a sandcastle competition in late May or early June. The Alameda Antiques Faire is one of the largest on the West Coast and is held the first Sunday of each month on the old naval base. Ferries to San Francisco and other bay area destinations leave from the ferry terminal on the northwest part of the island.

The West end is also the home to future growth and evolution of the island. Multiple residential, commercial, and mixed-use projects in the pipeline take advantage of the area's resources including developable land, stunning views, waterfront access, and the charm of a traditional Main Street business district.

Current business in the West End include: Webster Street District - a historic district with boutiques, restaurants offering a variety of cuisines and local hangout spots. Alameda Landing - Alameda's newest shopping center with Target, Safeway, and Michaels. Alameda Point - Located in the heart of the Bay Area on the island city of Alameda, Alameda Point (a former naval air station) is a neighborhood in transition. Creative reuse of military buildings and plans for new construction are in progress. Offering panoramic views of the San Francisco skyline, Alameda Point is home to historic buildings, important wildlife habitat, and a unique shoreline and open space landscape on the Bay. Ballena Bay - lots of water activities with a stand-up paddle water sports, marina, yacht club, and sailing school along with a number of small service businesses
